Gazing upon Hougang Central Bus Interchange, can you sense the echoes of its past? This bustling hub, nestled in the heart of Hougang, has witnessed the town’s transformation since its opening on December 17, 1994. Hougang Central Bus Interchange wasn’t the first bus terminal in the area. Smaller terminals dotted the landscape since the 1970s, serving early bus routes. One terminal stood near the current junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Tampines Road. Another existed near the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Serangoon View. Even a temporary roadside terminal operated on Hougang Street 21. The original Hougang Bus Interchange opened in 1983 on Hougang Street 21. This older interchange eventually became Hougang South Bus Interchange. It finally closed in 2004, after services shifted to Hougang Central Bus Interchange. The current Hougang Central Bus Interchange cost $5.7 million to build. It boasted a unique pyramid-shaped roof with skylights, air-conditioned crew areas, and a canteen. The interchange offered a modern, comfortable space for commuters and staff alike. From 1998 to 2001, construction of the Hougang MRT station necessitated a temporary closure of Hougang Central Bus Interchange. Six bus services diverted to a temporary interchange on Upper Serangoon Road. Once the MRT station finished, operations returned to the current location. Hougang Central Bus Interchange has constantly adapted to the community’s needs. In 2015, it underwent a 0.3-hectare expansion to accommodate more bus services and parking spaces. This expansion demonstrates its ongoing commitment to efficient public transport. Today, Hougang Central Bus Interchange, located at 840 Hougang Central, continues to serve as a vital transportation hub. It connects residents to various destinations across Singapore, including Changi Airport, Jurong East, and Clementi. The interchange seamlessly integrates with the Hougang MRT station, creating a convenient transfer point for commuters. As you stand here, consider the countless journeys that have begun and ended at Hougang Central Bus Interchange. Each bus, each passenger carries a story. This interchange is not merely a transit point, but a living testament to Hougang’s growth and evolution.
