Here stands Hôtel Pascal. It whispers tales of Marseille’s rich past. This isn’t just another building. It’s a portal to the 18th century. Imagine horse-drawn carriages clattering on cobblestone streets. Picture merchants discussing deals in bustling marketplaces. Hôtel Pascal stands as a proud testament to this era.

Built between 1728 and 1737, Hôtel Pascal is an architectural gem. Alexandre Louit designed it. He was the chief commissioner of the galley arsenal. Many consider its facade the most beautiful Louis XV facade in Marseille.

Look closely at the facade of Hôtel Pascal. The entrance opens under a curved bay. Rich moldings surround it. Pilasters support an entablature. Triglyphs adorn it. A grand balcony juts out slightly. The keystones feature mascarons. On the ground floor, they represent the four seasons. The first floor shows portraits of mythological divinities. The wrought iron adds a touch of elegance. Its vegetal designs echo the central balcony’s ironwork. Notice the third floor. It was added in the 19th century.

Hôtel Pascal later belonged to Jean-Arsène Séjourné. He was a merchant and banker. He also made soap and owned ships. Séjourné even served as president of the Marseille Chamber of Commerce. His daughter married Pierre Pascal. Pascal was a banker. He then became the owner. This is how the Hôtel Pascal got its name.

In March 1949, the facades and roofs were listed as historical monuments. Today, a shop occupies the building. Hôtel Pascal at 52 rue Paradis in Marseille’s 1st arrondissement is more than just a pretty facade. It is a journey through time. It is a reminder of Marseille’s vibrant commercial history. It is a testament to the enduring beauty of Louis XV architecture. Take a moment to appreciate the details. Imagine the lives that unfolded within these walls. Feel the pulse of history beneath your feet. Hôtel Pascal is a treasure. Its story continues to resonate through the centuries.
