Perhaps you’ve passed by without realizing the significance of what stands before you. This is the Hôtel du Grand Orient de France. It is located at 16 rue Cadet in Paris. Since 1853 this hôtel particulier has served as the headquarters for the Grand Orient de France. It also houses the Musée de la Franc-Maçonnerie.
Originally owned by the Grimaldi family the Hôtel du Grand Orient de France has a rich history. In 1700 the Prince of Monaco occupied it. Later in 1725 the Duke of Richelieu resided here. Marshal Clauzel called it home in 1830.
Under Prince Murat’s leadership the Grand Orient de France acquired the hotel. This marked a pivotal moment. The Masonic temple was inaugurated on June 30 1853 during the summer solstice. The Musée de la Franc-Maçonnerie was established here in 1889. Since 2003 it has been recognized as a museum of France by the Ministry of Culture.
During World War II Freemasons faced persecution like the Jews. They were accused of starting the war by Nazi Germany. On June 18 1940 the Hôtel du Grand Orient de France was looted by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg during the occupation of Paris.
The Vichy regime then passed a law prohibiting secret societies. All civil servants had to swear they weren’t members. On November 22 1940 the building became the headquarters of the Secret Societies Service. Bernard Faÿ led this service with about one hundred agents. They created files on Freemasons and lodges for the German and French police.
Between 1969 and 1972 the original facade was covered with a curtain wall facade. In a historic moment February 27 2017 marked the first time a French President visited. François Hollande came to the Hôtel du Grand Orient de France.
The Hôtel du Grand Orient de France features seventeen temples. Temple No 1 showcases the Second Empire style. Temple No 4 embodies the Art Deco style. This building has witnessed significant events.
