Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Right here before you stands the Hu00f4tel de Cabre the oldest visible building in Marseille. Its very stones whisper tales of centuries past.

Built in 1535 it was commissioned by Consul Louis de Cabre a wealthy Marseille merchant and alderman. The Hu00f4tel de Cabre stands proudly at the corner of Grand Rue and Rue de la Bonneterie. It’s a breathtaking mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It’s unlike anything else in the area.

Notice the impressive facade. See the effigies of Consul Cabre and his wife? They are beautifully carved next to a statue of Saint James. This honors Louis’s father Jacques de Cabre. The Hu00f4tel de Cabre is a testament to resilience. It survived the French Revolution. Revolutionaries destroyed the fleur-de-lys coat of arms. They considered it a royal symbol.

Even more remarkably the Hu00f4tel de Cabre withstood the devastating destruction of 1943. During the Marseille roundup the Germans razed almost all the surrounding streets. They obeyed Hitler’s orders. The Nazi regime deemed the area dangerous. They destroyed it. The demolition lasted from January 3rd to 19th 1943. Yet the Hu00f4tel de Cabre along with the Maison Diamantu00e9e remained standing.

In 1954 the Hu00f4tel de Cabre was moved and rotated 90 degrees. This was part of the neighborhood’s reconstruction. They moved it almost 15 meters. It now perfectly aligns with Grand Rue. The building is a marvel. Its survival is a testament to its historical significance. It is a truly remarkable building.

The Hu00f4tel de Cabre is more than just a building. It’s a living monument. It’s a reminder of Marseille’s rich past. It’s a powerful symbol of resilience and survival. Its story continues to unfold. It stands as a powerful symbol of the city’s enduring spirit. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Let its story sink in. Let its history inspire you.
