Have you ever wondered what secrets lie behind those elegant Parisian facades? Right here, before us, stands the Hôtel Couvé, a building whispering tales of 18th-century opulence and political intrigue. Built in 1737 for Pierre Couvay, banker and secretary to King Louis XV, the Hôtel Couvé is more than just a pretty face. It’s a time capsule, holding within its walls stories of a man who navigated the complexities of royal court and finance. Imagine Couvay, standing on the very spot we stand now, perhaps admiring the wrought-iron balcony held aloft by ornate corbels and mascarons. These mascarons, by the way, were lovingly restored in 2017, ensuring their grimacing faces continue to greet visitors for generations to come. The story takes a turn when Couvay’s daughter marries the Marquis de Crillon. Unfortunately, the Marquis, burdened by debts, sells the Hôtel Couvé in 1767 to Mr. Renoult, Louis XV’s former baker. Imagine the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the kitchens, replacing the scent of official documents and royal decrees. In 1846, the Hôtel Couvé took on a new role, becoming the town hall. The building that once housed whispers of royal secrets now echoed with civic debates and community celebrations. It housed the public school and the Justice of the Peace. The inauguration took place on May 31, 1846. Inside, the Council Chamber, now the Wedding Hall, holds a hidden gem. Two murals, reproductions of paintings owned by Victorien Sardou, a famous playwright and town councilor. He personally financed these works, depicting “The Manor of Marly-le-Châtel” and “The Royal Residence of Marly-le-Roi.” These murals offer a glimpse into Marly’s rich history, a testament to Sardou’s love for his town. The Hôtel Couvé is a testament to the enduring spirit of Marly-le-Roi, a place where whispers of the past mingle with the vibrancy of the present.
