Does the name Hosszúerdő-hegy sound like a fairy tale? This peak is one of the Budai Mountains. It rises to 373 meters. Other sources say 363 meters.
Hosszúerdő-hegy sits on the administrative border. This is between Budapest and Remeteszőlős. It’s part of the Nagy-Szénás–Zsíros-hegy massif. Its southern and western slopes once belonged to Nagykovácsi. Today they are part of Remeteszőlős. Remeteszőlős became an independent settlement in 2002.
Hosszúerdő-hegy is essentially an eastern extension. It is an extension of Remete-hegy. The Ördög-árok cut it off. This happened when the Remete-szurdok valley formed.
Its name sometimes appears as Hosszú-Erdő-hegy. This is common in tourist literature. The name’s origin remains unknown. It is also called Kis Remete-hegy.
The mountain’s bulk stretches northwest to southeast. It lies between the southern Nagykovácsi Basin and the Ördög-árok valley. The summit area faces the Nagykovácsi Basin. Its southern and western sides are wooded. The northeastern slopes run towards Máriaremete. They extend almost to the ridge line. The Remete-szurdok borders it to the west-northwest. Adyliget district lies to the east. Police facilities have stood at its southeastern foot. This is on the border between Adyliget and Remeteszőlős. Their presence may explain why tourist routes largely avoid Hosszúerdő-hegy.
A wide valley separates it from Fekete-fej. The valley likely formed from a former branch of the Ördög-árok. Fekete-fej rises near Hosszúerdő-hegy. It is located on the southern side of Nagykovácsi road.
The mountain block consists of Dachstein limestone and Hárshegy sandstone. The Rácskai Cave is in its abandoned quarry.
Reaching Hosszúerdő-hegy is easiest by public transport. Take buses 63, 157 or 157A from Hűvösvölgy.
The National Blue Trail runs near Hosszúerdő-hegy. It passes through the Remete-szurdok. This is the section between Piliscsaba and Hűvösvölgy. It is section number 13.
