Francisco Santojanni was an Italian immigrant. He arrived in Argentina seeking a better life. He found success here. Santojanni became a prosperous local grocer. But tragedy struck. His son contracted tuberculosis. This inspired Santojanni to act. He wanted to help others.
Santojanni decided to donate land to the city of Buenos Aires. The land was for a hospital specializing in tuberculosis treatment. But he had specific conditions. The city must build the hospital within five years of his death. If not the land would go to the Italian Benevolent Society.
Santojanni’s donation included over 66000 square meters of land. It also included over one million pesos. His generosity ensured the project’s feasibility.
The Hospital Donaciòn Francisco Santojanni opened on May 18 1940. It focused on treating tuberculosis as Santojanni wished. The hospital had 280 beds.
In 1977 the hospital closed for renovations. It reopened in 1981 as a general hospital. It was now named Hospital General de Agudos Donaciòn Francisco Santojanni. The renovated hospital incorporated staff from the former Hospital Salaberry. The incorporation expanded its capabilities. The hospital was now more comprehensive.
The building features a monoblock design. This means several floors are organized in linear tiers. This creates a single integrated structure. The design includes two basements. It also features a ground floor and four upper levels. A prominent tower and entrance portico mark its location.
