“Did anyone lose their sense of direction? Trying to find the beach and I ended up on a street called…Hospital Road?” chuckled a disoriented tourist, snapping a selfie. Hospital Road. A place of frantic arrivals and hopeful departures. A street that has witnessed the full spectrum of human emotion, from the joyous cries of newborns to the hushed goodbyes whispered in quiet rooms. Hospital Road is, of course, home to Victoria Hospital, the main healthcare facility in Castries. This essential institution, tirelessly serving the people of St. Lucia, is a beacon of hope, a testament to the dedication of medical professionals. It’s open 24/7, offering care to all who need it. On Sunday, February 19, 2025, a fire broke out on Hospital Road, engulfing a two-story building in flames. Thankfully, the Saint Lucia Fire Service responded quickly and extinguished the blaze. While the building, used primarily as an apparel storage area, was destroyed, it stood unoccupied, and no one was hurt. This incident, a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability, only underscores the vital role Victoria Hospital plays in the community. So, while you may have stumbled upon Hospital Road by accident, take a moment to appreciate its significance, its silent stories, and the vital lifeline it represents for the people of Castries.
