Founded by Italian immigrants, the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. This institution is more than just a place of healing. It’s a symbol of community, progress, and unwavering dedication to care.

Imagine stepping back in time to 1853. The Italian Society of Charities had a vision. They wanted to create a hospital offering exceptional medical care. Their dream took root. Father José Arata donated land and King Vittorio Emanuele I contributed funds.

Construction faced delays. The Paraguayan War and a cholera epidemic temporarily halted progress. The Hospital Italiano served as a refuge for soldiers and yellow fever patients. Finally, on December 8, 1872, the hospital opened its doors.

The Hospital Italiano quickly outgrew its original facilities. Its reputation for quality care attracted patients from diverse backgrounds. A new location was needed. In 1889, the foundation stone was laid for a new hospital building in the Almagro neighborhood.

Elisa F. de Juárez Celman, the President’s wife, attended the ceremony. A representative of King Umberto I of Italy was also present. The new Hospital Italiano opened in 1901. It was a modern facility equipped to meet the growing needs of Buenos Aires.

Over the years, the Hospital Italiano expanded its services. A Nursing School opened in 1903. In 1905, it became a school for medicine and surgery. The Policlínico building was inaugurated in 1913, adding even more capacity.

It is equipped with complete diagnostic and treatment equipment. Its medical staff is renowned. The Hospital Italiano also has an Institute of Basic Sciences and Experimental Medicine.

The Hospital Italiano’s orthopedic service was created in 1944 by Dr. Carlos Ottolenghi. He was one of the most important orthopedic surgeons in the world. The Hand Team was established in 1964.
