“A hospital built on a man’s last wish?” I hear you murmur. “Intriguing.” Well, let me tell you the story of the Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero. Right here, in the southern part of the Flores neighborhood, stands a testament to the generosity of one man. Parmenio Teódulo Piñero. Piñero, a man who never married and felt a strong connection to Flores through his mother’s family, bequeathed a substantial sum upon his death in 1907. Over two million pesos. His will stipulated that this money be used to build a public hospital for the city of Buenos Aires. The Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero is the realization of that wish. The cornerstone was laid in 1915, and just two years later, in 1917, the first section of the hospital opened its doors. This initial wing, with 40 beds, was dedicated to surgery. The hospital was designed in the style of the times. A series of pavilions scattered across a spacious park. Over the years, further wings were added. A medical clinic and a maternity ward, which included pediatrics, expanded the hospital’s services. The Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero continued to grow alongside the burgeoning population of Flores and the southern reaches of Buenos Aires. In the 1950s, a minimal care unit and ambulatory care facilities were added, significantly expanding its capacity. By 1954, a further expansion brought the total number of beds to 220. Today, the Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero boasts 400 beds. It serves thousands of people daily. It stands as a vital resource for the community. Even rock and roll history has touched this place. In 2006, the heavy metal band Rata Blanca, who originated in Bajo Flores and whose members had been treated at the hospital as children, held a benefit concert in nearby Parque Chacabuco. The concert drew 10,000 people who donated diapers for newborns, a gesture that underscored the hospital’s ongoing importance to the community. Even in recent times, the Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero has continued to evolve. In 2018, the emergency room underwent an expansion. This added 80 square meters, including new consultation rooms, waiting areas, and improved facilities for patients and staff. From a single man’s final wish, a legacy of care and healing continues to thrive within the walls of the Hospital General de Agudos P. Piñero.
