Imagine a swampy area transformed into a beacon of hope. That’s the story of the Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna. It stands as a testament to Buenos Aires’ commitment to public health.
The hospital’s origins trace back to 1905. At that time the Estacion Sanitaria Nueva Pompeya was opened. The surrounding area was far from glamorous. The “barrio de las latas” extended towards Avenida Caseros. It was a marshy zone filled with waste and inhabited by humble workers.
By 1926, the original station was insufficient. The community of Parque Patricios had simply outgrown it. On March 11, 1926, a groundbreaking ceremony was held. President Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear was present. The foundation stone was laid for the Hospital de Nueva Pompeya.
The Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna opened its doors on January 26, 1927. The first patient was welcomed. Initially, it had only two rooms with 26 beds each. One room was for clinical cases. The other was for surgery. Outpatient services were also available.
Just a year later, the Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna began to expand. Donations allowed for new facilities. Maternity and women’s surgery units were built. An emergency room, operating rooms and a radiology lab were added. Even a dentistry pavilion was created. In October of that year, two adjacent blocks were annexed. These housed stables, garages and support facilities.
That same year, the hospital’s name changed. It became the “Dr. Jose Maria Penna” Hospital. This honored Jose Maria Penna. He was a renowned hygienist and former Director of Public Assistance. Penna was also the founder of the Casa de Aislamiento in 1880. This later became Hospital Muniz in 1904. He even led the first citywide rat extermination campaign in 1906.
In 1945, the Mouras donation spurred further growth. Construction began on the main pavilion. It accommodated various departments. These included obstetrics, gynecology, clinical services, and orthopedics. Also included were traumatology, urology and intensive care. A neonatology ward and outpatient clinics followed in 1948.
In June 2012, the Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna unveiled a new emergency room. This was the result of a significant investment. The upgrades increased the emergency service’s capacity. The number of beds rose from 8 to 24. The professional staff grew from 38 to 55.
Today, the Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna offers a wide range of specialties. Adult medical specialties include cardiology and dermatology. Also included are endocrinology, gastroenterology and gynecology. Pediatric medical specialties include nephrology and neonatology. The hospital stands ready to serve the community.
From humble beginnings in a marshy area to a modern medical center, the Hospital General de Agudos Jose A. Penna has been a pillar of healthcare in Buenos Aires.
