Imagine a world war has just begun. Now focus on the Horváth–Kispál-kereszt. This stone cross stands as a testament to faith love and remembrance. It is located near the Royal Palace of Gödöllő.
The Horváth–Kispál-kereszt was erected in 1914. Horváth Dezső and Kispál Julianna commissioned it. They dedicated it to God the Virgin Mary and the salvation of souls. They also established a foundation with 100 crowns.
József Hirslich constructed the cross. Árpád Schlager consecrated it on Trinity Sunday June 7 1914. The cross originally featured a gilded corpus. János Hangai re-gilded it in 1929.
Time took its toll on the Horváth–Kispál-kereszt. It was restored in 2012 by Varga and Sons Ltd. The restoration included cleaning and repainting the corpus. They repaired the cross and its tiered base.
Look closely. You can see the inscription. It reads “To the glory of God to the honor of the Blessed Virgin and to the salvation of souls erected by Horváth Dezső and his wife born Kispál Julianna 1914”. The Horváth–Kispál-kereszt is more than stone. It is a symbol of devotion history and restoration. It connects us to the past. It reminds us of faith and the enduring power of love.
