Could a church truly be a family’s legacy? Here at Hornslet Kirke, the answer seems to be a resounding yes. This isn’t just any church; it’s a testament to the enduring influence of the Rosenkrantz family. The first mention of Hornslet Kirke dates back to 1310. Back then, it was known as “Our Lady and All Saints’ Church”. However, the story begins even earlier. Imagine a humble wooden structure, built sometime in the 900s. By the 1100s, a sturdier structure of fieldstone replaced it, forming the heart of the church we see today. The Rosenkrantz family further expanded the church, adding a soaring tower and a grand cemetery gate. Their mark is everywhere, from the epitaphs and tombstones that fill the church to the very air of history that permeates every corner. Inside, you’ll find treasures like the altarpiece, a masterpiece by the renowned Claus Berg. The intricately carved “Degnestol”, more of a lord’s chair than a simple clerk’s seat, whispers tales of Jørgen Ottesen Rosenkrantz and Dorthe Lange. Even the organ has a story. A gift from Baron Hans Rosenkrantz in 1899, it’s a rare Hohne organ, one of only five in all of Scandinavia. Hornslet Kirke stands as a testament to faith and family, a place where history comes alive.
