Today we stand before a testament to resilience, community and faith.nThe Hornsey Rise Baptist Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a beacon of hope in the Hornsey Rise area.nLet’s journey back to 1870. This was when the church was first founded. Details from these early years are sparse. We do know the names of some long-serving ministers. Rev. R.D. Darby served from 1895 to 1899. Rev. J.E. Joynes followed serving from 1899 to 1928. Rev. G.A. Linington then took the reins from 1928 to 1936. Rev. F.C. Amery’s time was from 1937 to 1941. Finally, Rev. T.W.G. Hopper completed the list, serving from 1941 to 1965.nDuring this time, the congregation gathered in a large, impressive building.nAfter the Second World War, London saw a surge in immigration. People came from across the Empire to fill labor shortages. This wave of newcomers changed the church’s makeup.nMany were Christians from Baptist churches overseas. They began attending Hornsey Rise Baptist Church. This initially caused some conflict but ultimately enriched the church. It led to the diverse, inclusive and multicultural fellowship that thrives today.nThe 1970s and 1980s presented new challenges. Pastor A. Andrews led the church from 1971 to 1986. Church numbers dwindled. The remaining members faced the daunting task of maintaining a large building. By the early 1990s, the old church building was deemed unsafe. It had to be torn down.nBut the story doesn’t end there. In 1996, a new chapter began. Part of the church land was sold. On the remaining land, the current building was erected. This was made possible by support from the London Baptist Association. Donations also poured in from other churches.nOur current pastor is George Masih. He arrived in January 2014. He is dedicated to building bridges with the local community. The church’s vision is to be outward-looking. It focuses on prayer and evangelism. The Hornsey Rise Baptist Church hopes to be an important and relevant part of the community. It strives to be a beacon for those who are lost.nToday the Hornsey Rise Baptist Church extends a warm welcome to all. It embraces those seeking a church home or simply passing through.
