Built in 1849, the Horner Mühle stands proudly in Bremen’s Horn-Lehe district. The story of the Horner Mühle isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who kept its sails turning and the community that rallied around it. The mill, a “Galerieholländer” type, boasts a three-story octagonal base made of plastered brickwork. Supporting corner pilasters add to its sturdy charm. Four louvre wings, combined with an automatic wind tracking system and wind rose, allowed the Horner Mühle to harness the power of the Weser winds. The mill served the community diligently. But as technology advanced, the wind’s role diminished. A steam engine was added in the late 19th century to supplement power on less windy days. Later, in 1926, a diesel engine took over, and by 1933, the wind-powered milling ceased. Miller Lür Kaemena ran the Horner Mühle from 1907. His son, Johann Kaemena, continued the family tradition from 1936. Even though the wind was no longer the primary power source, the Horner Mühle remained a vital part of the community. The Horner Mühle faced the inevitable wear and tear of time. But the community wouldn’t let it fade. The Bürgerverein Horn-Lehe spearheaded several renovations. Local residents generously donated, ensuring the mill’s survival. These restoration efforts, in 1966-1968, 1995-1999, and most recently, 2016-2017, speak volumes about the community’s affection for the Horner Mühle. Today, the Horner Mühle stands as a testament to Bremen’s history and the dedication of its people. It is a reminder of a time when windmills dotted the landscape. It’s a symbol of resilience and community spirit. The Horner Mühle’s story is etched not just in its weathered bricks, but also in the hearts of those who cherish it.
