“A playground made of rope? Now I’ve seen everything!” a child’s voice might exclaim at Horan Park. Horan Park, nestled in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood, isn’t your average park. It boasts a unique playground, renovated in 2016, that ditches the traditional metal and plastic for a web of rope netting. Imagine climbing through rope tunnels, balancing on rope bridges, and conquering a vertical climbing net, all within this innovative play area. Horan Park offers more than just ropes, though. Kids can enjoy saucer swings, a large spinning climber, and even an adaptive swing with a harness. A small water feature with four sprayers provides a refreshing splash on hot days. The playground is partially fenced, offering some protection from the bustling city streets. Mature trees provide pockets of shade, a welcome respite from the Chicago sun.

Horan Park spans over three acres, offering a variety of amenities beyond the playground. A softball field and basketball courts provide opportunities for athletic pursuits. There’s also plenty of green space for picnics, relaxation, or simply enjoying the fresh air. Horan Park has a rich history, dating back to 1924 when the city began leasing the land for a small park. It quickly became a community hub, featuring playground equipment, a brick recreation building, and even an ice skating area during the winter months. The park was named after Albert J. Horan, a World War I aviator and local alderman. He was a prominent figure in the community, serving as a co-founder of the American Legion and a Democratic Committeeman. The city officially purchased the land for Horan Park in 1948. In 1957, the park became part of the Chicago Park District. Over the years, Horan Park has undergone expansions and renovations, including the greening over of South Albany Avenue and the addition of ball fields and basketball courts. The park’s small fieldhouse, which once stood as a testament to the park’s community focus, is currently closed. While there might not be structured programs at Horan Park itself, nearby Homan Square Park offers a variety of activities and athletic permits. As you explore Horan Park, consider the generations of Chicagoans who have found recreation and respite within its boundaries. From its humble beginnings as leased land to its current incarnation as a vibrant community space, Horan Park continues to evolve, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and modern play.
