Lost amidst the vibrant tapestry of Buenos Aires, a simple plaque bears a weighty story. The Horacio Abeledo Plaque, nestled in the San Cristobal neighborhood, silently echoes a life tragically cut short. This unassuming memorial, established on March 24, 1984, remembers Horacio Adolfo Abeledo, a young man who vanished into the dark abyss of Argentina’s Dirty War. The Horacio Abeledo Plaque’s inscription is a stark reminder of the horrors of that era: “21/7/1976. Detained-disappeared from the neighborhood by the military dictatorship. Present in our memory. Neighbors of San Cristobal.” Horacio, a 23-year-old employee of the State Procurement Bidding Department, was snatched from his home on July 21, 1976. His residence, located at Belgrano 2027, 4th floor apartment D in Balvanera, became the scene of his forced disappearance. The Horacio Abeledo Plaque commemorates this very act of state-sponsored terror. Born on July 25, 1953, in Buenos Aires, Horacio’s life was tragically intertwined with the turbulent political landscape of his time. He was a student of anthropology and a member of the PRT (Revolutionary Workers’ Party). The Horacio Abeledo Plaque serves as a poignant testament to his stolen future. His remains were tragically found in the waters of the Río de la Plata, near the south breakwater of the port of Colonia, Uruguay, on September 5, 1976. He was initially buried as an unknown individual in the Colonia Cemetery. It wasn’t until 2010 that the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) identified his remains, finally giving a name to one of the countless victims of the dictatorship. The Horacio Abeledo Plaque, however, does more than just recount a tragic tale. It embodies the resilience of a community. It reflects the unwavering determination of the neighbors of San Cristobal to remember their lost son. It stands as a beacon of hope, a symbol of remembrance, and a stark warning against the perils of silence in the face of injustice. The Horacio Abeledo Plaque whispers a story of loss, but also one of remembrance, etched into the very heart of Buenos Aires.
