How much history can these walls hold? Right here, before you, stands the imposing structure of Hôpital Esquirol. You might know it better by its former name, the Asylum of Charenton. This building has borne witness to centuries of changing approaches to mental health. Founded in the 17th century, Hôpital Esquirol began as a humble seven-bed hospital. It was a refuge for the poor and ill thanks to a generous donation by Sébastien Leblanc, an advisor to King Louis XIII. By 1660, the hospital’s focus shifted. It began to serve those with mental illnesses. The construction of the Maison Royale de Charenton in 1732 marked a pivotal moment. The institution began to house some individuals sent by lettres de cachet, often at the behest of their families. In the 19th century, Hôpital Esquirol underwent a transformation under the guidance of Jean-Étienne Esquirol. A renowned psychiatrist, he envisioned a more humane approach to treatment. This vision led to a substantial rebuilding project in the mid-1800s. The design, overseen by architect Émile Jacques Gilbert, reflected Esquirol’s philosophy. Hôpital Esquirol continued to evolve. In 1920, it began housing a maternity ward, marking another shift in its long history. Today, while the original Hôpital Esquirol building stands as a testament to its past, the institution has merged with the neighboring National Hospital of Saint-Maurice to become the Hôpitaux de Saint-Maurice. This fusion represents a modern approach to healthcare. But the legacy of Hôpital Esquirol, etched in its very walls, continues to remind us of the ongoing evolution of mental health care.
