Hoosier Prairie is more than just a pretty place. It’s a vital piece of Indiana’s history. Dedicated in 1977 as both a State Nature Preserve and a National Natural Landmark it holds a surprising variety of plants and animals. This area showcases the impressive biodiversity of the sand plains north of the Valparaiso Moraine. The rolling hills and sandy soils support more than 350 native plant species. At least 43 of these are uncommon or rarely seen in Indiana. Imagine the white wild indigo or the vibrant Indian paintbrush.
Did you know that fire was once a natural part of this prairie’s ecosystem? It kept the trees from overtaking the prairie grasses. Settlers suppressed these fires resulting in woody plants invading the prairie. Today carefully controlled fires help maintain the prairie’s original character.
Take a walk on one of the trails. You’ll pass through oak savannas wet prairies and even marshes. Listen for the calls of red-headed woodpeckers. Look for sedge wrens flitting through the tall grasses. You might even spot an eyed brown butterfly. The “potholes” small depressions holding water year-round are home to unusual reptiles and amphibians.
The Hoosier Prairie’s history is also compelling. Irene Herlocker-Meyer dedicated ten years to saving this land from development. Her efforts were crucial to the preserve’s creation and preservation.
The preserve’s 1500 acres are a testament to conservation. It started as a small core of 300 acres. Through dedication and hard work this important habitat has expanded. Although part of Indiana Dunes National Park much of the preserve is managed by Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources.
