Journey with me to Hooley in Surrey. Imagine a place where history whispers from every corner.

Hooley is more than just a village. It is a tapestry woven with threads of time, railways, and community spirit. Let’s delve into its story.

Hooley was once a sparsely inhabited hamlet. It belonged to Chipstead, a chalk upland area. This changed with the arrival of the railways.

Two rival railway lines recognized the area’s potential. They built short tunnels through Hooley as the best route from London to Brighton. These deep cuttings became notorious for landslips over the years.

But the railways weren’t the first to carve through Hooley. Before them, the Surrey Iron Railway made its mark in 1805. This horse-drawn plateway also passed through Hooley. Today, you can still see a bridge from this early railway. It stands at the junction of Brighton Road and Dean Lane.

In 1965, Hooley became part of the London Borough of Croydon. However, its residents chose to return to Surrey. Hooley was then added to Banstead.

Let us talk about the name Hooley. It comes from old English words. “Holh” and “leah” combine to mean “woodland clearing in the hollow”.

Today, Hooley sits on a western slope. It occupies a narrow pass. This pass is the lowest road crossing point of the North Downs.

As you wander through Hooley, you will notice houses lining the A23 Brighton Road. There are also some buildings to the west. The village has a few shops. You will find petrol stations, a newsagent, a village hall, a social club and bar, and a café.

One notable landmark is St Margaret’s Church. It is the parish church of Chipstead. You will find it at the junction of Star and Church Lanes.

Once, the Star Inn was the heart of Hooley. Dating back to the 1770s, it thrived with the development of the Brighton Road. Sadly, it was demolished in 1977 when the A23 was widened. This was a great loss for the village of Hooley.

Hooley has seen many changes over the years. From a quiet hamlet to a railway hub. It then became a community with its own identity. It remains connected to its past through landmarks and stories.

As our tour concludes, remember Hooley. It is a place where history is not just in books. It is etched into the landscape and the spirit of its people. Its story reminds us that even small villages can have a big impact.
