Atop a hill, a solitary obelisk pierces the Budapest sky. This is the Honvéd hősi emlékmű, a memorial dedicated to the bravery and sacrifice of the Royal Hungarian Honvéd. The Honvéd, whose name means “Defender of the Homeland”, played a crucial role in Hungarian history, especially during the tumultuous revolutions of 1848. The Honvéd hősi emlékmű stands as a stark reminder of their struggle. The Royal Hungarian Honvéd was established after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. It served as one of four armed forces of the dual monarchy, alongside the Austrian Landwehr, the Common Army, and the Imperial and Royal Navy. Although smaller than the Common Army, the Honvéd consisted of highly trained regular soldiers. They were organized into various units, including infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments. These units were deployed throughout the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen, encompassing modern-day Hungary and parts of several neighboring countries. The Honvéd hősi emlékmű commemorates not only the soldiers of 1848, but also the subsequent history of this crucial military force. The Honvéd continued to serve until the end of World War I in 1918. Later, the term “Honvédség” was used to denote the Royal Hungarian Army from 1919 to 1945. This obelisk, the Honvéd hősi emlékmű, therefore embodies a complex and multi-layered history. It is a testament to the dedication of the Hungarian soldiers who fought to defend their homeland.
