On a crisp autumn day in 1897, the Honkawa Bridge gracefully spanned the Honkawa River in Hiroshima, a gleaming testament to modern engineering. It connected the bustling Nakajima-Honmachi district, a hub of entertainment and commerce, with the business district of Sakai-machi-suji. Honkawa Bridge quickly became a beloved landmark. But its story, like that of Hiroshima, would soon be marked by tragedy. The year 1945 brought the horrors of the atomic bomb. Honkawa Bridge stood just 250 meters from the hypocenter. The bridge, though not completely destroyed, suffered significant damage. The intense blast shifted the bridge beams, causing them to break off from their piers. Water pipes ruptured, cutting off the vital water supply to the surrounding area. Honkawa Bridge, a symbol of connection, was fractured. In the immediate aftermath, makeshift repairs were made, boards laid down to restore some semblance of passage. But the damage was extensive. The Makurazaki Typhoon in September of that same year delivered the final blow, collapsing the bridge, leaving only the resilient piers standing as silent witnesses to the devastation. Yet, even in the face of such destruction, the spirit of Hiroshima, reflected in the Honkawa Bridge, refused to be broken. In 1949, the bridge was reborn. Using salvaged steel from the Hikari Navy Arsenal in Hikari City, the Honkawa Bridge was painstakingly reconstructed on the surviving piers. It rose again, not just as a bridge, but as a symbol of resilience, a testament to the city’s unwavering determination to rebuild.
