“De mi tumba verán florecer un puño.” Those words capture the spirit of Dardo Sebastián Dorronzoro. We stand here today at the Homenaje a Dardo Dorronzoro y Desaparecidos de Luján. This monument honors Dardo and others who vanished during Argentina’s dark years. It is a testament to their courage and a reminder of the price of freedom.

Dardo Dorronzoro was born in San Andrés de Giles in 1913. His family was socialist. They moved to Luján to escape political persecution. Dardo became a writer, a poet, and a blacksmith. He worked as a blacksmith in the morning. In the afternoon, he dedicated himself to literature. Dardo contributed to various publications. These included El Civismo de Luján and La Gaceta de Tucumán.

In 1964, Dardo won the Emecé Novel Prize for his book “La nave encabritada.” He published his poetry collection “Una sangre para el día” in 1975. Dardo’s political views made him a target. During the military dictatorship, his home became a refuge. Artists and intellectuals gathered there. They debated, shared readings, and watched films.

The Comando Nacionalista Jordán Bruno Genta targeted those opposing the regime. On June 25, 1976, Dardo was abducted from his home. His wife Nelly was with him. Dardo Dorronzoro never returned. He remains disappeared to this day.

After his disappearance, Dardo’s work continued to inspire. In 1984, “Llanto americano” was published. In 2016, “Viernes 25” was released. This compilation included his poems and Nelly’s letters. She wrote these during her search for him.

Osvaldo Caldú was deeply connected to Dardo. He was a political prisoner. Osvaldo formed his political views with the poet. From exile, he dedicated himself to preserving Dardo’s legacy. Osvaldo also fought for the rights of a whole generation.

Osvaldo created the sculpture “Puño que reclama justicia.” It stands near where Dardo was kidnapped. The sculpture embodies Dardo’s verse. It declares that a fist will bloom from his grave.

The Universidad Nacional de Luján honors Dardo. They named an auditorium after him. They also created the Dardo Sebastián Dorronzoro Poetry Contest. A plaque remembers him in a university hall since 2008.

Dardo’s life was a fusion of art and activism. He turned his home into a sanctuary for free thinkers. His disappearance is a wound. It is a wound that hasn’t healed for Argentina. This Homenaje a Dardo Dorronzoro reminds us of the importance of remembering. It calls for justice for all the disappeared. May their memories inspire us to defend freedom.
