Here stands Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, a testament to faith and community. Cardinal Wiseman laid its foundation stone in 1851. This act marked the beginning of a significant chapter for Catholics in Hammersmith.

Holy Trinity Church is more than just a building. It’s a Grade II listed structure. This means it is recognized for its special architectural and historical interest. William Wardell designed the church in the Gothic Revival style. He chose Kentish ragstone as the primary material. The construction cost about 20000. Helen Countess Tasker contributed 4000 to the project. The church opened its doors on July 26 1853.

Look up at the southwest tower. The spire was added later. Some say it was in 1867. Others claim it was 1871. Most sources credit Joseph Hansom with its design. He was a renowned architect. Nikolaus Pevsner originally attributed it to Charles Francis Hansom.

Step inside Holy Trinity. Notice the north and south side aisles. The nave is lit by a clerestory. The nave and chancel feature arch-braced roofs. The stained glass windows are the work of John Hardman. His artistry adds to the church’s beauty.

From its early days, Holy Trinity served a growing Catholic population. Irish immigrants greatly boosted this community. The church became a vital center for them.

In 1862 a school for girls and infants was built behind Holy Trinity Church. Joseph John Scoles designed it. By 1894, the children moved to Sacred Heart School. The former school building became the parish rooms.

Today, Holy Trinity continues to serve a diverse parish. Its international community thrives. Many French-speaking families attend because of the nearby Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle. The Syriac Catholic Church also uses the space. They hold Mass in Arabic and Aramaic on Sunday afternoons.

Consider the present presbytery completed in 1964. It stands as a testament to the church’s ongoing evolution. Holy Trinity’s history reflects the changing face of London.

Holy Trinity Church stands as a beacon of faith. It represents community and architectural beauty. Its history is intertwined with the lives of those it serves. The church welcomes all who seek solace and spiritual nourishment. It remains a vital part of Hammersmith’s cultural landscape.
