In the late 19th century, a growing Orthodox community in Chicago yearned for a spiritual home. Rusyns, Russians, Serbs, and Greeks came together. They established St. Vladimir’s Church. It was a small wooden structure. However, their vision was much grander. They wanted a church that reflected their heritage and their aspirations.
The founders of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church were immigrants. They hailed from Carpathian Rus’, Galicia, and the Balkans. They wished for the church to remind them of the small rural buildings they had left behind.
Construction began in 1902. Funding came from the immigrant community and even Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The Tsar donated 4,000 roubles. Louis Sullivan, a renowned architect, also contributed. Sullivan donated part of his fee, about $1250.
Sullivan was a seminal architect. He was known for his work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is one of only two churches designed by him. He blended traditional Russian elements with his signature Art Nouveau style. The octagonal dome and frontal bell tower echo Russian provincial architecture. Sullivan added decorative elements influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements. These can be seen over the western entrance. They are also in the window and roof framing and the bell tower and cupolas.
The church features a Healy & Millet manufactured chandelier. Its value remains unknown. The church also has prairie-style stained glass windows. Louis Millet was the artist behind these.
Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral holds a special place in Orthodox Christian history. St. Tikhon of Moscow consecrated the church. St. John of Chicago guided it during its early years. Both are revered figures. St. John later returned to Russia. He was martyred during the revolution.
In 1923, the church was elevated to a cathedral. Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of the Midwest. It is part of the Orthodox Church in America. Archbishop Daniel leads the Cathedral. Priest Alexander Koranda serves as Cathedral Dean.
