How does a church become a beacon? Let’s explore the story of Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. It began with a need and a calling.
In 1925, a pastor was needed at the Church of God In Christ on West Carroll Avenue. The congregation sought guidance through prayer and fasting. Elder John D. Harris and Sister Luivory Littlejohn both received the same message. God had sent Bro. Eleazar Lenox.
Bishop William Roberts ordained Eleazar Lenox as pastor on July 20, 1925. Pastor Lenox wanted a better home for his congregation. He and John T. McCarroll found a storefront at 2673 W. Lake Street. They agreed it was the place. The congregation rallied to purchase it. But a real estate agent swindled them. Yet, they didn’t give up.
On January 1, 1928, they moved into the storefront. It became known as “The Power House of Chicago”. The church dedication was a revival led by Evangelists Reatha and Leatha Herndon. Many souls were saved.
The Lake Street Church grew quickly. People came from all over the city to attend Sunday night services. It was so packed, some people watched from the windows. In 1944, Pastor Lenox knew they needed a larger space. He found a Lutheran Church at 246 N. California Avenue. The Holy Ghost led him to it.
That same morning, the Lutheran congregation had decided to sell. They agreed to sell for $35000, or $25000 cash. The members pledged what they could. Pastor Lenox used his life savings. Still, they were $10000 short. Bishop Mason loaned Elder Lenox the money.
On June 10, 1945, the congregation marched to 246 N. California Avenue. It was then named Holy Temple Church of God In Christ. It was the only church edifice among the Church of God In Christ in Chicago.
Holy Temple had great church mothers. Mother Mary Dudley taught about God. Mother Anna Wynn comforted people. Mother Ada Walker offered counsel. Under Bishop Lenox, there were nine Assistant Pastors.
Holy Temple became Greater Holy Temple. It became a monument to the Church of God in Christ. Many evangelists contributed to its growth. The church became an incubator for other churches.
Located at California and Walnut, it’s a landmark. Bishop Lenox pastored for 60 years. Then, his son Elder James E. Lenox took over. Elder James cared about community affairs. He was a counselor for youth. He was also known as the “preacher’s preacher”.
After Elder James Lenox passed, Elder Lamont Lenox became pastor. He implemented ministries like the James E. Lenox Bible Institute. He improved the church building.
Today, Greater Holy Temple continues to thrive. It has members from the Lake Street Church days. Pastor Lamont leads with wisdom and anointing. The legacy continues. Greater Holy Temple stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It is a true beacon in Chicago.
