Standing here before the Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ one can almost hear echoes of gospel music. This church started with humble beginnings. But it rose to become a beacon of faith and community in Chicago.
In 1925, the congregation needed a new pastor. They sought guidance through fasting and prayer. Elder John D. Harris and Sister Luivory Littlejohn both received the same divine message. The Lord had sent Brother Eleazar Lenox. Bishop William Roberts ordained Brother Lenox on July 20, 1925.
Pastor Lenox wanted a better home for his congregation. He and Father John T. McCarroll found a storefront at 2673 W. Lake Street. They agreed that this was the place. The congregation supported the purchase. But a real estate agent swindled them. Undeterred, they raised another $500 for a down payment.
On January 1, 1928, the congregation moved into the storefront. It became known as “The Power House of Chicago” and the 26th Street Church. Twin Evangelists Reatha and Leatha Herndon led a great revival. Many souls were saved and joined the church. The church’s popularity grew attracting people from all over the city. The Lake Street Church was always packed especially on Sunday nights. People even looked in the windows to see the rejoicing saints.
In 1944, Pastor Lenox knew they needed a larger space. He walked to the Lutheran Church at 246 N. California Avenue. This was two blocks from the Lake Street Church. The Lutherans had decided to sell the church that very morning. The agreed price was $35,000 or $25,000 cash.
The congregation prayed and worked together. Despite facing financial hardships they pledged generously. Pastor Lenox invested his life savings. With help and loans from Anna J. Thompson and others they were still $10,000 short. Bishop Mason loaned Eld. Lenox the money without a contract.
On June 10, 1945, the congregation marched from Lake Street to 246 N. California Avenue. A police escort and a marching band accompanied them. The church was named Holy Temple Church of God In Christ. It stood out as the only church edifice among the Church of God in Christ in Chicago.
Mother Mary Dudley taught about God. Mother Anna Wynn comforted people. Mother Ada Walker offered counsel and advice. Under Bishop Lenox’s leadership nine assistant pastors served. Holy Temple later became Greater Holy Temple. It became a monument to the Church of God in Christ. Evangelists like Elder White and Evangelist Randall contributed to its growth. The church became an incubator for many churches in Chicago.
Greater Holy Temple stands on the corner of California and Bishop E. Lenox Drive. Bishop Lenox pastored for 60 years. His son Elder James E. Lenox succeeded him. Elder James focused on community affairs. He was a counselor for teens. Many pastors sought his wisdom. After Elder James Lenox’s passing Elder Lamont Lenox became the pastor.
Pastor Lamont implemented new ministries. These include the James E. Lenox Bible Institute and monthly outreach feedings. He also renovated the church building. Today Greater Holy Temple continues its legacy. Pastor Lamont leads with wisdom.
Over 90 years later the legacy continues. Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ remains a testament to faith perseverance and community.
