High on a Kensington hill stands Holy Rosary Church. Its spires pierce the sky a beacon for the faithful. This isn’t just any church. Holy Rosary is a living testament to Melbourne’s vibrant history.

Before 1902 Kensington lacked a church. Residents walked to St Brendan’s in Flemington for mass. Imagine the journey! A long walk to attend mass or school. That changed in 1915 when Holy Rosary Parish was established on Derby Street.

The first Holy Rosary church was built there. It wasn’t long before a school followed. In 1916 Archbishop Carr blessed the foundation stone. The Sisters of Mercy ran the school. Sister Clare Daly was the first principal. Think of the dedication these women showed. They served the community faithfully.

The Derby Street church eventually made way for a grander structure. The current church on Gower Street opened on Christmas Day 1928. Archbishop Mannix presided at the grand opening. This magnificent building boasts a stunning stained-glass window. The Hardiman family donated this beautiful addition. It’s a gift that continues to bring joy and light.

Holy Rosary wasn’t just for Kensington’s original families. It became a home for many migrants. Irish Italians Maltese Salvadorians Vietnamese Sri Lankans and Somalis. All found solace and community within these walls.

The closing of the saleyards and abattoirs in 1984 transformed Kensington. New families arrived. Holy Rosary remained a constant a symbol of faith and hope. Today Holy Rosary Church stands tall a symbol of enduring faith and community spirit. Its beauty is a testament to the many people who have built its legacy. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of faith and resilience. A beautiful story indeed.
