Imagine a time when Chicago’s borders only stretched as far as 39th street. The Holy Rosary Catholic Church, standing tall at 610-614 North Western Avenue, is a testament to that time. The church’s history is intertwined with the rise of the nearby Pullman town, a company town built by the industrialist George Pullman to house his factory workers.

The church was initially intended to serve the Irish Catholic community who settled in the area. However, a feud between the church’s first pastor, Rev. John Waldron, and George Pullman delayed the church’s construction. The disagreement even led to the resignation of Father Waldron, who famously denounced George Pullman’s authority in his final sermon.

Despite the initial setbacks, the Holy Rosary Catholic Church was finally completed in 1890. The church’s Romanesque Revival style was in vogue at the time. It’s a grandeur yet restrained church, showcasing only a limited amount of ornamentation. One of the most prominent features of the church is its 85-foot-tall bell tower. The bell tower was a source of comfort to the community for decades, its bell announcing milestones and somber moments.

In 1925, after some initial delays, the church was finally redecorated. The interior was adorned with a symphony of colors, intricate designs, and religious icons. The church’s sanctuary, which was painted to suggest a sky with floating angels, was a particularly striking feature. This renovation coincided with the arrival of John Mallin, an artist who was commissioned to decorate the church.

Sadly, during the 1930s, a devastating fire consumed the church’s interior. Fortunately, thanks to the swift actions of firemen, the church’s beloved stained-glass windows endured. However, all of the painstaking hand-painted decorations by John Mallin were destroyed in the blaze. The congregation rebuilt the church, and it reopened its doors in 1938.

Since its initial founding, the church has served the community for over a century. It has witnessed the changing face of Roseland and the Pullman district. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, resilience, and community.
