“Witamy” welcomes you. That’s Polish for “Welcome”. You stand before Holy Innocents Catholic Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story etched in brick and stained glass.

Holy Innocents Catholic Church stands proudly in Chicago’s East Village. It’s a magnificent example of Polish Cathedral style architecture. Its grandeur speaks to the deep faith and rich heritage of Chicago’s Polish community.

The story begins in 1905. Polish immigrants founded this parish. They purchased buildings from St John Evangelical Lutheran Church. This was a crucial step. It established a spiritual home for a growing community. The original structures served as the first church and school. The current church wasn’t completed until 1912.

Worthmann and Steinbach designed the building. They were renowned architects known for their beautiful Polish Cathedrals. The Romanesque Revival style is stunning. Six cupolas covered in brown tile are a key feature. Notice the large dome and the exquisite stained glass. It’s imported from Austria and Poland. It’s a breathtaking sight.

Holy Innocents remained a predominantly Polish parish until 1975. Then territorial boundaries changed. Today it welcomes people of all backgrounds. Services are in English Polish and Spanish. This reflects the changing face of Chicago. The church continues its mission of service and faith. It is a vibrant community hub.

A fire in 1962 caused significant damage. The interior was redesigned and restored for the parish’s centennial. Above the triple entrance doors you’ll see words of welcome in three languages. “Welcome” “Witamy” and “Bienvenidos”. This is an invitation to all.

In 2021 Holy Innocents merged with other parishes. They became the new parish Blessed Maria Gabriella. The church’s history continues. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. Holy Innocents Catholic Church stands as a beacon. It remains a vital part of Chicago’s vibrant tapestry.
