In the bustling heart of Chicago, a vibrant community thrived. Holy Ghost Catholic Church stood tall at the corner of Adams and Kildare Streets. It served as a testament to the unwavering faith of the German Catholic community in Garfield Park. Holy Ghost Catholic Church was more than just a building. It was the heart of the community. The church was officially organized in 1896. Just a few years later, in 1898, a remarkable combined church, school, hall, and residence was constructed. The architect, Henry Schlacks, designed this multifaceted building. It was meant to serve the growing parish until a larger church could be built. The building, measuring 50 by 75 feet, eventually housed the school. By 1920, Holy Ghost Catholic Church had grown to include 300 families. About 200 children attended the school. Sunday mass was a grand affair, drawing approximately 2,500 attendees. A pivotal moment in the church’s history came in 1924. Reverend Charles A. Erkenswick became the pastor. By 1929, Holy Ghost Catholic Church had become incredibly diverse, attracting people of many nationalities. It also became a renowned novena center. A tragic event shook the community on Good Friday, March 30, 1929. Father Erkenswick was shot. The assailant was the father of two boys jailed for robbing the church’s poor box. He was angry that Father Erkenswick wouldn’t help release them. Miraculously, Father Erkenswick survived. He continued to lead his flock until his death in 1936. Following his passing, an administrator was appointed. In 1941, Holy Ghost Catholic Church merged with St. Mel Parish. The original combined building then became the St. Mel-Holy Ghost Chapel. A new school was built at 4237 W. Adams. Sadly, the original Holy Ghost Church building was eventually demolished. It exists now only in memories and photographs. One such photograph, published in 1903, showcases the exterior of this once-thriving center of faith and community. It is a poignant reminder of the ever-changing landscape of our cities and the stories they hold.
