Holy Family is a ministry of Holy Family Parish. The school operates as Holy Family Bilingual Catholic School today. Its history stretches back to 1927. That’s when it was first built. The Sisters of Providence staffed it then. Over 150 sisters taught here for 65 years.
The school embraces bilingual education. It is the only bilingual Catholic school in the Seattle area. Holy Family offers the advantage of learning two languages. It also promotes strong Catholic values.
Principal Larkin Temme believes in the benefits of bilingualism. She notes that students in bilingual environments become more sophisticated thinkers. Their listening skills and memory increase. They also gain a greater understanding of their first language.
Holy Family’s two-way immersion program is unique. English and Spanish speakers learn together. They become authentically bilingual and culturally literate. The program starts with 100% Spanish immersion in preschool. The immersion gradually decreases through the grades. By middle school, it is 20%.
The school emphasizes early learning. Eighty-five percent of students read before kindergarten. This is thanks to enriched and play-based offerings. These are for students aged 2.5 to 5.
Small class sizes are a hallmark of Holy Family. There are around 15 students per class. The teachers are dedicated and compassionate. Most of the teaching staff is bilingual. They tailor lessons to meet individual needs.
Holy Family encourages students to treat all with respect. Students extend service to the less fortunate. Each month, students are awarded for demonstrating a virtue. These include empathy, self-discipline, and perseverance.
