The Maronite Church itself boasts a rich history dating back centuries. It’s an Eastern branch of the Catholic Church with its unique liturgy canon law and patriarch. Their faith has deep roots tracing back to St Maron a hermit and priest who lived near the Orontes River in the fourth century. The early Maronites faced intense persecution. To protect their faith they sought refuge in the mountains of North Lebanon. Their history is intertwined with the ancient Phoenicians and their traditions. Their language Syriac a sister language to Aramaic adds to the church’s unique character. The Holy Family Maronite Church reflects this rich heritage.
In 1918 this small community took a significant step. They purchased a Protestant church for $2250. This marked the birth of the Holy Family Maronite Church. It wasn’t a grand building but a place where their faith could truly flourish. Over time the church became dilapidated. But their faith remained strong. They persevered. In 1950 they broke ground for a new church. The new Holy Family Maronite Church was dedicated in 1951. Its architecture pays homage to the early Romanesque churches of Syria and Lebanon. The brick walls trimmed with Mankato stone and topped with a red Spanish tile roof create a warm inviting atmosphere. A new rectory followed in 1958 strengthening the church’s presence further.
