Could a school survive a hurricane? Well, Holy Cross School in New Orleans is a testament to resilience. Founded in 1849 by the Congregation of Holy Cross, Holy Cross School has a rich history. The school has weathered many storms, both literally and figuratively.
The school was originally located in the Lower 9th Ward, an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The campus was flooded, and the school was forced to relocate. But Holy Cross School did not give up. The school found a new home in the Gentilly neighborhood, on the campuses of the former St. Francis Cabrini Parish and Redeemer-Seton High School.
The new Holy Cross School features state-of-the-art facilities, including a high school, middle school, preschool, elementary school, athletic facilities, and an administration building. Holy Cross School is the only all-boys Catholic school in the Greater New Orleans area to offer a comprehensive Pre-K through 12th-grade education. The school is also home to a championship-winning wrestling team, which has won the Louisiana State Wrestling Championship 25 times.
Holy Cross School is a beacon of hope in the New Orleans community. The school’s motto “Crux Spes Unica” means “The Cross Is Our Only Hope.” Holy Cross School is a living example of this motto, providing a quality education to young men for over 175 years.
