“A Dance of Holy Innocence”” – a peculiar name for a mural, wouldn’t you say? But then again, Our Lady Star of The Sea Catholic Church here in New Orleans has never been ordinary. This grand old dame, built back in 1911, has seen more than her fair share of life’s ups and downs. She stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the Black Catholic community in the heart of the St. Roch area. Our Lady Star of The Sea has weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Ida in 2021 couldn’t break her spirit. The community rebuilt her, stronger and more vibrant than ever. Speaking of vibrant, step inside and gaze upon the magnificent mural behind the altar. This isn’t just any religious artwork. This is a reflection of the community itself, a tapestry of faith and heritage woven into a breathtaking masterpiece. The artist, in a stroke of inspired revision, replaced the original all-white angels with a diverse host of heavenly beings. Look closely, and you’ll see the spirit of New Orleans reflected back at you – the iconic Lake Pontchartrain lighthouse, the faces of the people, the very soul of this unique parish. Our Lady Star of The Sea is a beacon of hope. It’s a reminder that faith can endure, rebuild, and inspire, even amidst the storms.”
