This church, the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, has seen a lot of change. South Lamar Boulevard wasn’t always as bustling as it is today. Back in 1963, the land Holy Cross sits on was a ranch. Austin was much smaller then without the towering buildings of the city’s modern skyline. The congregation decided to build a church at this spot, which was then on the outskirts of the city. Holy Cross is a landmark in South Austin. The original ranch house still stands on the grounds. It’s called Qualben Hall and is used for community gatherings. However, the church itself was built in 1964 during a period of great change and innovation in church architecture. The church has a mid-century modern aesthetic, with a design inspired by the story of Noah’s ark, a symbol of hope and renewal. You can see the limestone altar and font that feature fossil impressions from over 265 million years showcasing the interconnectedness of all things. Holy Cross is a vibrant and welcoming community, rooted in the Lutheran tradition. It is known for its commitment to social justice and inclusivity, and its vibrant worship services are known for its emphasis on music and meaningful engagement.
