Around Holte Station’s charming square stands Holte. A modern suburban district it boasts a rich history. Once a small village Holte’s story is intertwined with the Dronninggård estate. The name Holte originally referred to Gammel Holte a village a few kilometers to the northeast.

In the 1780s the owner of Holtegård moved his inn to a new site on Kongevejen. He cleverly named it Ny Holte Kro the New Holte Inn. This name stuck. It became the name of the local railway station when the North Line opened in 1864. The station and surrounding area became known as Holte. The old village was then renamed Gammel Holte Old Holte.

Holte’s growth accelerated. It absorbed the villages of Søllerød and Øverød. These became part of Holte’s postal district 2840 Holte. Modern Holte is a blend of old and new. It has a thriving town centre with the Holte Midtpunkt shopping centre. It also features the impressive Søllerød Town Hall. This Functionalist masterpiece was designed by Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen. It was completed in 1942. Holte Church stands proudly atop Geels Bakke completed in 1945.

Holte’s natural beauty is undeniable. Several lakes dot the landscape. Vejlesø lake is a highlight. It’s connected to the larger Furesø lake by a canal. A small ferry connects these two in the summer months. Holte is bordered by beautiful natural areas. These include Vaserne Rude Forest Søllerød Naturpark and Geels Forest.

Holte is home to notable figures. Johanne Hesbeck a photographer ran a portrait studio here from 1915 to 1927. Emil Telmányi a Hungarian violinist lived his last years here. Many athletes call Holte home. These include cyclist Frank Høj footballer Alexander Fischer badminton player Peter Gade and basketball player Jacob Larsen. Holte combines modern convenience with its historical charm. It is a vibrant community surrounded by captivating scenery. A true gem on Copenhagen’s doorstep.
