How about a journey back in time to Hoholz? This part of Bonn, perched 100 meters above the Rhine, whispers tales from centuries ago. Imagine this. You are standing where people likely lived long before written records even mentioned Hoholz.
Around 1903, archaeologists unearthed grave fields just north of Schloss Birlinghoven. These graves date back to the older Iron Age from 850 to 450 BC. “The people at the high wood” is how Hoholz was first written about in 1755 in tax lists. But remember, people were here well before that.
Hoholz officially became part of Bonn in 1969. It came from the municipality of Stieldorf. Today, some consider Hoholz one of Bonn’s nicest areas. It is often compared to Venusberg. Both sit high above the Rhine offering great living. Life feels good here in Hoholz.
A bus stop is just outside your door. Meadows and pastures lie behind gardens. The Ennert forest is a short walk away. Hoholz offers essential shops for daily needs. Kindergartens and the Om Berg elementary school serve the children of Hoholz.
The Bürgerverein Hoholz or Hoholz Civic Association was founded in November 1959. Its goals remain unchanged since then. The association promotes community and cultural values. It also maintains local traditions and festivals. The Bürgerverein is nonpartisan, economically independent and not tied to any religion.
Today, Hoholz has about 735 residents as of December 2022. You will find a small shopping area with a restaurant and a municipal kindergarten. There is also the Om Berg elementary school with a multipurpose hall. A funeral home, a flower shop and a cemetery are here too. Admire the well-preserved timber-frame houses. Gut Ettenhausen also belongs to Hoholz.
Hoholz sits near the Birlinghovener Forest and the Ennert. “Om Berg” refers to Hoholz and other places above Holzlar. People take pride in the fresh air and views. They live “on the mountain”. That is Hoholz. A place where history and nature meet. It is a lovely place to call home.
