Imagine a bustling city, brimming with stories of pioneers and immigrants. You’re standing before the Hofheintz-Reissig Store Plaque, a small but mighty reminder of a bygone era in Austin’s history, and you’re about to uncover a story of resilience and transformation. It’s a Texas Historic Landmark, nestled on a corner in the heart of vibrant downtown Austin.

This plaque commemorates a two-story limestone building, built between 1850 and 1875, for German immigrant Henry Hofheintz. The site served as a grocery and dry goods store, a saloon, and even a residence for almost a century, offering a glimpse into the life of a prosperous German family who made their mark on the city.

Hofheintz, who arrived in Texas in 1845, was a teamster who hauled freight between San Antonio, Mexico, and Austin. He acquired a large parcel of land along the Concho River and established the Hofheintz-Reissig Store, a testament to his ambition and adaptability in a frontier setting. In 1880, after a lifetime of hard work, Hofheintz passed on the store to his eldest daughter, Catherine Louise, and her husband, Adolph Reissig. They continued the family legacy, but Adolph soon shifted to tailoring, even making clothes for the famous Austin City Marshal, Ben Thompson.

By the early 1890s, the store was evolving, with a saloon and a domino parlor, adding entertainment to the traditional family business. When Adolph Reissig died in 1907, ownership of the property transferred to his wife, who even built a “wedding cottage” for their printer-son Herman. Herman Reissig continued to run the store until 1952, making it a fixture in the neighborhood for decades.

The Hofheintz-Reissig Store Plaque reminds us that even in a city that embraces change, stories of resilience and family bonds endure. It stands as a testament to the hard work, adaptability, and cultural influence of the early German settlers who shaped Austin’s identity, and a valuable reminder of the city’s rich and complex past.
