Long ago on October 19 1833 the First Baptist Church was organized in Chicago. Nineteen members gathered under Rev Allen B Freeman’s leadership. This wasn’t just any church. It was the first house built for religious worship in Chicago. It stood near Franklin and South Water streets a two-story frame structure. The upper floor served as a school the lower for religious services.

This early First Baptist Church faced challenges. Rev Freeman tragically died in 1834. His successor Rev Isaac T Hinton was an Englishman who proved remarkably popular. He even predicted the end of the world in 1873. He wasn’t a prophet though. The First Baptist Church thrived under Hinton’s leadership. Its congregation grew so large it needed a bigger building. They started construction on a new edifice. The financial crisis of 1837 halted the project.

The First Baptist Church eventually secured a new brick building at Washington and LaSalle streets. This larger church cost $4500. It boasted a basement for lectures and school a 112-foot spire and even a clock with five dials. Tragedy struck again. A fire in 1852 destroyed the church building. The congregation rebuilt and the new church cost $30000. Despite its success the First Baptist Church went through multiple splits and divisions that resulted in the formation of other Baptist Churches in Chicago. This rich history highlights a vital presence of Christianity in Chicago’s early days. The story of Hoffman Street Baptist Church continues. It is a testament to the resilience of faith and community in a constantly evolving city. Though this church isn’t specifically mentioned in these historical records its existence shares in the heritage of Chicago’s early Baptist congregations.
