What’s in a name? A lot, if you’re talking about Hodgkins Park. You might think it got its name from some nature enthusiast, but you’d be wrong. Hodgkins Park actually owes its name to a village, which in turn, got its name from a man named Jefferson Hodgkins. Now, Jefferson wasn’t known for his love of meadows or his fondness for squirrels. He was a businessman, a quarryman to be precise, and the president of the Kimball and Cobb Stone Company. This company was a big deal, the first of its kind to set up shop in the area back in 1888. They even had a street named after them: Cobb Street. But it was Jefferson Hodgkins whose name stuck, becoming synonymous with the village and, eventually, this very park. So, as you stroll through Hodgkins Park, take a moment to remember Jefferson Hodgkins, the quarryman who inadvertently lent his name to a patch of green.
