Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at the Hochkreuz in Bonn you can. This isn’t just a roadside cross it’s a story etched in stone.
The Hochkreuz a Gothic votive column stands as a testament to faith and artistry. It was built around 1360 commissioned by Archbishop Wilhelm von Gennep. This wasn’t just some random act of piety. The construction coincided with the 200th anniversary celebration of the translation of the relics of the Three Kings to Cologne and the expansion of the Cologne Cathedral’s west facade. Quite a momentous occasion.
For centuries the Hochkreuz stood sentinel along the old road between Bonn and Bad Godesberg. It became a beloved landmark for travelers. Numerous engravings and lithographs captured its image. The Hochkreuz became a symbol of Gothic architecture attracting attention during the rise of Romanticism in the late 18th century.
Time took its toll. The Hochkreuz suffered significant damage over the years. But the romantic revival of interest in Gothic architecture led to a major restoration in 1859. Cologne Cathedral master builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner oversaw the project. A cross that had previously topped the stele was replaced with a Gothic finial. The large figures in the pedestal niches Christ John the Baptist and two angels were renewed by cathedral sculptors Christian Mohr and Peter Fuchs.
Modernization brought change. The expansion of the old road to Bad Godesberg into a federal highway in 1957 necessitated the Hochkreuz’s relocation. It moved about 50 meters south. Then in 1979 it was disassembled again meticulously restored and finally re-erected in 1981 at the entrance of the Rhineland Museum Bonn. A true scale replica now stands near the Hochkreuz light rail station. The original meanwhile resides safely within the museum. William Turner himself painted the Hochkreuz during his Rhine journey in 1817. A watercolor capturing this iconic monument’s essence.
