How did Hoca Piri, a man of charity, leave his mark on Istanbul? We are standing before the Hoca Piri Camii. It stands as a testament to his good heart. This mosque has a rich history dating back to the 15th century.

Hoca Piri Camii was built around 1470. Hoca Piri, a benefactor, commissioned its construction. He wanted to create a place of worship for the community. To ensure its upkeep, Hoca Piri dedicated significant resources. These included a han, 34 shops and a sum of money. These funds covered the mosque’s expenses and the salaries of its staff for a long time.

Interestingly, Hoca Piri Camii is also known as Makasçılar Camii. This second name adds another layer to its identity. The mosque faced turbulent times. Fires caused significant damage over the years. It was renovated in 1751 to repair the fire damage. Further repairs occurred in 1955. However, in 2001, the decision was made to rebuild Hoca Piri Camii using reinforced concrete. While providing a more durable structure, this reconstruction altered its original form.

Let’s take a closer look at the mosque’s features. Hoca Piri Camii has a small courtyard. This courtyard includes ablution facilities and restrooms. Above these, there is lodging for the imam. The main entrance is to the north. It leads from the last congregation area into the prayer hall. Inside, the minbar is crafted from walnut wood. The mihrab is adorned with tiles. Two rows of windows line the walls, one above the other. Tiles cover all the walls from the floor to the lower windows. Above the entrance, there is a small upper gallery. The ceiling is flat with a concrete plaster finish.

Today, Hoca Piri Camii has a single minaret. The roof is covered with red tiles. These features were added during the 2001 reconstruction. The rebuilding significantly changed the mosque’s original appearance.

Reflect on the layers of history within these walls. Hoca Piri’s initial act of charity in 1470. The fires and subsequent renovations. The complete rebuild in 2001. All contribute to the story of Hoca Piri Camii. This mosque embodies resilience and adaptation. It serves as a reminder of enduring faith. It also highlights the changing face of Istanbul.
