The scent of aged wood and incense hangs heavy in the air. This is the Hoca Kasim Gunani Cami. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Istanbul.

Built in 1558 by Hoca Kasim Gunani a scholar of his time the Hoca Kasim Gunani Cami stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. The inscription on the main gate proclaims its restoration in 1838. It wasn’t always known by this name. It was once called the Hasan Huseyin Mosque. This was due to two men Hasan and Huseyin who served Ebu Eyyup el-Ensari. Tragically they were martyred while escaping anti-Muslim violence. They found their final resting place near the mosque.

The mosque’s design is a marvel of ascending architecture. Its wooden interior spans 110 square meters. The minbar rostrum and mihrab are crafted from wood. The walls are hand-worked. This creates a sense of intimate quiet. The single minaret stands independently. It has a pointed tip and a single balcony. The exterior is brick cemented. The wooden cover was renewed in 1970.

The lower part of the Hoca Kasim Gunani Cami houses essential facilities. These include toilets an ablution area and a prayer room. The modest mausoleum of Ashab-i Kiramdan Cafer bin Abdullah Ensari is situated at the front. The mosque maintains a preacher imam and a muezzin. It even has a two-story entailed estate near the clerics. The mosque underwent renovations in 1976.

The Hoca Kasim Gunani Cami is more than just a place of worship. It is a living record. It speaks of religious devotion sacrifice and the enduring spirit of a community. It is a window into Istanbul’s rich past. As you stand before it breathe in its history. Let its quiet dignity touch your soul. The Hoca Kasim Gunani Cami continues to resonate with the echoes of its past. It offers a peaceful haven in the vibrant city of Istanbul.
