In 1960, a seed of faith was planted in Tebet, Jakarta. This seed grew into what we now know as HKBP Tebet Barat. HKBP Tebet Barat’s story began on September 19, 1960. The congregation initially didn’t have a permanent home. Then, on February 2, 1968, construction began on a permanent church building. This building, measuring 24 by 20 meters, became a symbol of the growing congregation. HKBP Tebet Barat officially became a Ressort on March 28, 1971. A significant moment in the church’s history came on November 25, 1979. The church was inaugurated by Ompui Ephorus Ds. GHM Siahaan. Years passed, and the congregation continued to grow. By 1996, plans were underway for a major renovation. The church envisioned a larger, two-story building with a balcony, measuring 21 by 31 meters. This ambitious project was completed and inaugurated on December 3, 2000, by Ephorus Pdt. Dr. JR Hutauruk. The new building offered much-needed space. The basement, spanning 650 square meters, housed a multipurpose hall, offices, and a consistory room. The main sanctuary on the second floor, covering 416 square meters, could accommodate 550 people. The addition of a 288-square-meter balcony provided seating for another 250 worshippers. Today, HKBP Tebet Barat stands as a testament to the enduring faith of its community. It serves as a vibrant hub for approximately 4,000 active members, representing around 1,000 families. This makes HKBP Tebet Barat one of the largest churches in Jakarta. It has adapted to modern challenges. During the pandemic, the church embraced technology. Live-streaming services became a lifeline for the community, allowing members to worship from home. HKBP Tebet Barat continues to thrive. It’s a place where faith, community, and history intertwine.
