Beneath Jakarta’s vibrant skyline stands HKBP Kayu Putih. It is a place of worship steeped in history.
HKBP Kayu Putih is part of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestant. HKBP is one of Asia’s largest Christian congregations. Its history shows Batak tribal dynamics. HKBP’s story includes crises, reunions, and ministry. It works with other churches to share the Gospel. This is for all tribes in Indonesia and the world.
The history of HKBP began long before this church. The Bonjol War from 1825 to 1829 saw Sir Rao attack the Batak people. In 1834, Pdt Munson and Rev Lyman arrived. They were envoys from the American Zending Kongsi. Sadly they were murdered in Lobupining.
The European perspective on the Batak people changed. In 1840, anthropologist Junghun visited Batak land. His reports helped Europeans recognize the Batak people.
Missionaries began translating the Bible. Mr Van der Tuuk translated parts of the Bible into Batak. This included grammar and a Dutch-Batak dictionary.
The Rheinische Zending sent priests to Batak land in 1853. This was after mistreatment of priests in Banjarmasin. The Batak people requested evangelization.
The first baptism in Batak land occurred on March 31 1861. Rev Van Asselt baptized Jakobus Tampubolon and Simon Siregar in Sipirok. October 7 1861 marks a key date. The German Rheinische Mission began its services. This is considered the birthday of HKBP. Four missionaries discussed zoning services in Tapanuli. They were Rev Heine Pdt JC Klammer Pdt Betz and Pdt Van Asselt.
HKBP continued to grow. Churches were established in Sarulla and Pangalaon Pahae in 1862. Pdt IL Nommensen built in Huta Dame in 1864. The first church in Batak land was inaugurated there. It was named HKBP Saitnihuta and HKBP Pearaja.
HKBP expanded its ministry. The first three people were baptized in Sipirok on December 25 1864. They were Thomas Siregar Philip Harahap and Johannes Hutabarat. Schools were also founded.
HKBP established a presence in Jakarta. In 1922, the first HKBP Reverend was placed in Jakarta. This showed the church’s growing influence.
Today HKBP Kayu Putih continues this legacy. It is part of Distrik VIII DKI Jakarta. This district includes 81 churches. It ministers to around 147874 people.
HKBP Kayu Putih is in the Kayu Putih subdistrict. It belongs to Ressort Kayu Putih. The church stands as a beacon of faith. It offers accessible prayer for everyone.
The church address is Jl. Gereja No 1 RT 4 RW 10. Its pastor is Pdt Mei Marulak Siahaan.
