Imagine migrants seeking solace. They yearned for a spiritual home. That’s the story of HKBP Kalideres. This church offers more than just religious services. It provides a sense of community.

HKBP stands for Huria Kristen Batak Protestant. It is an Evangelical Lutheran church. It serves the Batak ethnic group. The Toba Batak people of Indonesia are its main members. HKBP uses an Ecumenical worship style. This style blends Dutch Reformed Church traditions. The Rhenish Missionary Society also influenced it.

The Batak Christian Protestant Church plays a vital role. It is one of Indonesia’s largest Protestant churches. It ranks as the third largest religious organization. Only Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah are larger. Victor Tinambunan leads the church as Ephorus or bishop.

The roots of HKBP trace back to the 19th century. Early missionaries tried to reach the Batak highlands. The German Rhenish Missionary Society sent them. Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen arrived in 1864. He founded “Huta Dame” a village of peace.

Nommensen’s approach was unique. He applied local customs to Christian beliefs. This helped the church grow. In 1881 Nommensen became the “ephorus”. He led the Batak congregations. The first Batak ministers were ordained in 1885.

HKBP became independent in 1931. It was the first self-governing Christian body. This happened in the Dutch East Indies. In 1940 the Dutch detained all Germans working for the RMG. Rev. Sirait became the first indigenous ephorus.

HKBP joined the Lutheran World Federation in 1952. It maintained its unique character. In 1954 HKBP founded Nommensen University. This further strengthened its role in education.

Over time some church bodies split from HKBP. This happened due to cultural and doctrinal reasons. However HKBP remains the largest Indonesian LWF member. Its influence extends throughout Indonesia and worldwide.

HKBP has congregations in Singapore and Malaysia. It also has churches in California, New York and Colorado. This shows its global reach. The church welcomes people from all ethnic backgrounds.

The church uses a liturgical book called the “Agenda”. This term comes from European Protestant traditions. It guides their worship and practices.

HKBP’s leaders have played crucial roles. Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen was the first ephorus. Other notable leaders include Valentin Kessel and Johannes Warneck. Rev. K. Sirait was the first Batak ephorus.

HKBP’s mission involves Diakonia Marturia and Koinonia. These departments focus on social services evangelism and fellowship. They address issues like poverty and justice. They provide care for orphans and people with HIV/AIDS.

HKBP also runs many schools and health centers. These institutions provide vital services. They help improve the quality of life for many people. This reflects its commitment to serving communities.

So here at HKBP Kalideres you witness a vibrant community. It blends Batak traditions with Christian faith. It shows a unique story of resilience and growth.
