In 1959, a small congregation began worshipping in Jakarta’s Kramat Jati district. This marked the humble beginnings of what would later become HKBP Gedong. HKBP Gedong, located in Pasar Rebo, Jakarta Timur, stands as a testament to the growth and enduring faith of the Batak Christian Protestant Church community in the Indonesian capital. HKBP Gedong is part of the larger HKBP Distrik VIII DKI Jakarta, which serves the entire Jakarta area. The Distrik itself was officially established on July 11, 1950, originally known as Distrik VIII Jawa Kalimantan. In 2023, HKBP Distrik VIII DKI Jakarta boasted a remarkable membership of 147,874 individuals. This represents a significant portion of Jakarta’s population, demonstrating the church’s strong presence in the city. HKBP Gedong, under the leadership of Pdt. Sakarias Simanjuntak, serves as one of the 81 churches and 2 non-church worship places (Parmingguon) within the district. These are organized into 54 Ressorts and 1 Persiapan Ressort. The story of HKBP Gedong is intertwined with the larger narrative of HKBP’s growth and expansion throughout Indonesia. From its origins in North Sumatra in 1861, through the tireless efforts of missionaries like Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen, HKBP has become a significant Christian denomination in the country. HKBP Gedong reflects this history, serving as a beacon of faith for the Batak community in Jakarta. The church’s presence in the Kramat Jati Ressort underscores the diversity of HKBP’s reach, encompassing various locations throughout the city. HKBP Gedong continues to thrive, contributing to the rich tapestry of Jakarta’s religious landscape. It serves as a spiritual home and community center, connecting the Batak people with their faith and heritage.
