Two cannons stand silent sentinels at Hjørne Batteri. This is Vestvolden Voldpunkt 1 a significant part of Copenhagen’s defenses. Built in 1888-1892 it was part of the Copenhagen’s newer fortifications. Hjørne Batteri was one of several batteries along Vestvolden. Smaller 9 cm cannons served as auxiliary support. These provided extra firepower when needed. Hjørne Batteri’s position was strategically important. Its location allowed for effective control over a wide area. This ensured the defense of Copenhagen.
The design of Hjørne Batteri and other permanent fortifications along Vestvolden was ahead of its time. These structures were built to withstand intense bombardment. The materials were strong. However the rapid advancement of warfare technologies quickly rendered these fortifications obsolete by the turn of the century. By 1920 Vestvolden and Hjørne Batteri were decommissioned.
