Imagine Hızır Ağa a man of importance decided to build this Hızır Çavuş Cami. The Hızır Çavuş Cami stands before us a testament to Istanbul’s rich history. It is located in the Balat neighborhood of the Fatih district. This area is known for its diverse cultural heritage.

The Hızır Çavuş Cami is also known as Çavuş Mescidi or Sefer Çavuş Mescidi. Its exact construction date remains a mystery. However historical records suggest it was built after the Conquest of Constantinople. Hızır Ağa an official in Mehmed II’s court commissioned it. He was a divan çavuşu a type of court officer.

In 1854 a great fire swept through Balat. The Hızır Çavuş Cami was consumed by the flames. A benefactor stepped forward to rebuild it. They rebuilt it in the spirit of its original founder. During 1963 and 1964 the mosque underwent renovations. These renovations included the use of reinforced concrete.

Today the Hızır Çavuş Cami features a single minaret. The minaret has one balcony. The structure is made of masonry. It is covered with a simple tile roof. The interior and exterior walls are coated with cement plaster. The minbar and kursi are made of wood. The mihrab is made of marble.

In the courtyard of the Hızır Çavuş Cami lies a tomb. It is believed to be the final resting place of Hızır Çavuş himself. Next to the mosque there is a Quran course bearing the same name.

There is some debate about the identity of the person buried in the courtyard. Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi argues the tomb does not belong to Hızır Ağa. Tahsin Öz suggests the mosque was commissioned by Sefer Çavuş. These conflicting accounts add to the mosque’s mystique.

As you stand here consider the layers of history. Think of the fire the renovations and the debates surrounding its origins. The Hızır Çavuş Cami continues to be a place of worship. It serves as a reminder of Balat’s past. It stands at the corner of Hızır Çavuş Street and Çorbacı Çeşmesi Street its short minaret a sign.
